Student Travel Surveys
(Information in this section is provided by or based on information from the National Center for Safe Routes to School.  For further information, please click here.)

When planning and implementing your Safe Routes to School program, please keep in mind all five of the Es: Education, Encouragement, Engineering, Enforcement and Evaluation.  Many programs do not plan with evaluation methods in mind.  It is important to evaluate your situation prior to any interventions, in order to assess needs and strengths, and then again after your program launch to evaluate the success of your program.  The following tools will help you during the planning process, as well as during the evaluation period.

School Site/Neighborhood Assessment
The following worksheets can be used to determine whether your community is pedestrian-friendly and/or bicycle-friendly.  These worksheets will help you discover your community’s strengths, as well as areas needing improvement.  We recommend gathering a group of interested participants and canvassing an area within a two mile radius of your school.

Parent Discussion Session
When trying to determine what your school needs to promote active commuting, it is an excellent idea to host a parent discussion session.  Be sure you set an agenda and have a SRTS committee member serve as the moderator to ensure your meeting will remain productive.  Below is a link to a useful tool for you and the parents to work on.  This form will help the parents identify barriers and assets in your community.

Evaluation

Evaluation is a critical component of any Safe Routes to School program.  Evaluation allows you to determine what aspects of your program are successful and what areas need adjustments.  Continuing evaluation will help you better allocate your resources into the most productive methods.  Please use the National Center for Safe Routes to School links below to download your evaluation tools.
