Arkansas Safe Routes To School Program
To date, Congress has provided less than half of the funding authorized for the Safe Routes to School Program for Federal Fiscal Year 2009. For this reason, the Department will not be accepting applications for the Arkansas Safe Routes to School Program until further notice.
The Arkansas Safe Routes To School Program utilizes Federal funding to encourage children in kindergarten through eighth grade to walk and bicycle to school.
This will be accomplished by providing 100% Federal funding for educational programs, infrastructure projects within two miles of affected schools, and Safe Routes Startup Awards. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for the children of Arkansas to walk and bicycle to and from school.
The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department is required by Federal legislation to spend at least 10% and no more than 30% of Safe Routes To School funds on educational programs. The remaining 70% to 90% of funds are to be allocated to infrastructure projects which can include the development of comprehensive Safe Routes To School plans and Safe Routes Startup Awards.
