Grouped under the supervision of the Assistant Chief Engineer for
Planning are four divisions, each assigned specialized jobs. The
Programs and Contracts Division coordinates the short-range construction
program, monitors federal-aid funding, and prepares contract documents for
project bids. Environmental ensures that projects conform to environmental
requirements. Planning and Research is responsible for long-range
planning, research and development, federally funded transit programs, and
intermodal activities. The Surveys Division conducts highway location
surveys. The Traffic Safety Office is responsible for highway and rail
crossing safety programs.
